A batch of clay that we made over a week ago is still soft and workable. This homemade clay is even nicer to work with after it sits for a few days. So I wanted to share with you the recipe I used.

How to make clay that hardens
To make a pinch pot, start with a ball of clay and then use your thumb and forefinger to slowly pinch the clay inward until it forms a small bowl shape. Pinch pots are great for holding small items like jewelry or keys. Then, add 1 part cornstarch and mix everything together until it forms a sticky, yet smooth, consistency.

To form the tablet take the clay, once it has reached a workable consistency, and form it into a rough rectangle. Throughout history these would be different sizes depending on what the tablet was used for. I decided to make a relatively small table which would fit in the palm of my hand. So I formed a sheet about 5mm thick and then inscribed my inscription and then cut around it to give a small rectangle about 45mm by 40mm.

There are other alternatives to making clay ball root tabs but they have their advantages and disadvantages as well. The gelatin capsulesin size 00 that use Osmocote Plus work well but it has the potential to create problems if it releases too much too fast. Another option is commercially available root tabs available at many pet stores and online. The commercially available root tabs are the most expensive and sometimes harder to find.
Some ingredients I had, some I didn't, so I decided to improvise. Stir the mixture every seconds to avoid burning the clay. You’re just going to use it to rinse the clay again.
